Paper Napkins go into the Trash

August 03, 20263 min read

I'll be honest—I've sat through plenty of trainings, read a lot of books, and listened to successful people speak. Sometimes I hear something and think, "I already know this."

Then I hear the same thing six months later, and it hits me completely differently.

The message didn't change. I did.

Maybe I needed to experience something first. Maybe the timing wasn't right. Or maybe I finally got tired of knowing what to do without consistently doing it.

That's personal growth.

Sometimes we don't need another new idea. We need to act on something we've already heard 10 times.

Most agents already know they should prospect, follow up, stay connected to their database, ask for referrals, improve their communication, and manage their time better.

The problem usually isn't knowledge. It's execution!

KEEP Reading if you want...because I know most people close this email out right here!

Are you paper Napkin' n your business like i usto to do? Thats not a business...thats called guess work.

For the next 30 days, give yourself an honest score from 0–10 at the end of each workday. Base it on meaningful conversations, follow-ups, appointments, handwritten notes, and new opportunities created.

Don't score yourself based on how tired you are. Being exhausted doesn't always mean you were productive.

Five workdays give you a possible score of 50. If you're consistently scoring between 35 and 40 or higher, you're probably building momentum. If you're below that, don't beat yourself up. Now you have something real to improve.

The market has changed, and we have to change with it.

You wouldn't wear a winter coat in July just because it worked in January. But we sometimes do exactly that in business—we keep using the same approach and wonder why it no longer produces the same results.

The opportunities are still there. They may just look different.

There are buyers who finally have more choices, first-time buyers who don't believe they can afford a home, past clients with adult children who should be buying, expired listings, FSBOs, homeowners considering their next move, and professionals who could become valuable referral partners.

We have to adjust our message and be willing to have the conversations.

We also need to tell better stories.

A "Just Sold" post tells people you closed another transaction. A story about a buyer who never thought homeownership was possible—and what you did to help them—is something people will remember.

People remember the problem you solved and how you made someone feel. They don't always remember the statistics.

Technology is another area where we need to grow. AI isn't going away. It can help with follow-up emails, listing descriptions, marketing ideas, call preparation, organization, and repetitive tasks that take time away from relationships.

Ask yourself:

What do I do every week that takes more than 30 minutes and could be simplified?

Start with one task. Learn the tool, check the work, and build from there. You don't have to master everything overnight.

Finally, hold yourself accountable.

Training matters. Coaching matters. Being around the right people matters. But none of those can replace personal responsibility.

Your numbers will tell you the truth:

How many meaningful conversations did you have?
How many people did you follow up with?
How many appointments did you schedule?
How many new opportunities did you create?

These questions aren't meant to make you feel bad. They're meant to help you adjust before another week, month, or year goes by.

So here's what I want you to think about:

What's one thing you've heard repeatedly but still haven't consistently put into practice?

Choose that one thing. Commit to it for the next 30 days and measure what happens.

You probably don't need another new idea.

You may just need to finally act on the right one.
